While some South Africans are celebrating getting about R350 to which they are not entitled, the public authority is checking a deficiency of R11 million accordingly.

According to the South African Social Security Agency, 31,955 individuals illegally profited from the Covid-19 social alleviation of pain (SRD) award at an expense of R11 million to the state.

This was revealed by Dianne Dunkerley, the SASSA leader for grant administration during an appearance before the parliamentary select committee of trustees on wellbeing and social administrations.

The revelation that individuals who were not qualified for the award had either gotten it or gotten more than they were qualified for, arose following the arrival of the SASSA general’s report.

The SASSA has since made it clear that it does not tolerate any attempt to access the grant by people wo do not qualify for it, insisting serious action would be taken against those who do not take heed.

Presented in March last year, the SRD award was intended to help residents truly affected by the Covid-19 Pandemic and the lockdown in South Africa. The award ran until April this year and was re-introduced in July, the award will be paid until March 2022.
